All About Melanie

So hello! I’m Melanie, mother of three smart, gorgeous girls and wife to my tall, dark, and handsome husband Mark (that should be good for a few brownie points)!  My three passions of being on the water, designing homes, and travel have collided, creating this beautiful blog “The Floating Cottage”.

Being on or by the water brings me peace and joy, and you will probably laugh, but that love of the water certainly shows in the names of my three beautiful daughters: Lakeland, Brookland, and Riverland.  Together with my oldest daughter Lakeland, we have created this blog to inspire you to create a home you love, bring you first time features of lake living at its best, and to inspire you to wander.

A little about me, after receiving my degree in Interior Design from Tennessee Tech University, I stayed at home with my girls, designing and building our first home, and working part time as a Kitchen and Bath designer here and there,  later creating a successful career in sales.  I am the queen of Craigslist, flea markets, and online auctions, building beautiful rooms on tight budgets.  I have often said when God was handing out talents he must have said ‘let’s see how far this girl can go with just a smile’…. I can’t sing, dance, or play an instrument.  I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time.  Well, that smile has taken me pretty far in life, but maybe he did give me one small talent and that is a knack for seeing what things can be… knowing which walls to knock down, how to make things pretty again, to breathe new life into spaces.

I can rarely sit still, I live out of my suitcase, traveling often for my work and with my husband for his wicked busy job as a Division 1 Athletic Director.  We are also constantly back and forth between our land home and our “floating cottage” as well as creating as many amazing traveling adventures with our daughters as possible!  Lakeland my business partner and firstborn will often be blogging on our travel experiences as well as her adventures in the Disney College Program.

Mark and I are still newlyweds, being married less than two years! He is the love of my life and my biggest cheerleader.  I love that he is always willing to help with my crazy ideas!  Here you will get the inside scoop on our gorgeous lake wedding and ideas on how to have an elegant and fun wedding for less than $10,000.

Sweet Mark also helped me achieve my 20 year dream of owning a houseboat!  At “The Floating Cottage” you can experience life at the dock, what it is like living on a boat, and how those wonderful marina friends become your true family!  I can’t wait to share with you all the love and life at our Pates Ford Marina on Center Hill Lake, our little piece of Heaven!

Take a look around and be inspired!

We’re glad you’re here!
